Office / Studio

There are a couple of reasons why we decided to construct a building that we have named office / studio. The main reason is to have a place for guests to stay. It might seem strange to have a separate building for guests, but as we are quite far away from a lot of friends and family, we would like them to stay for a longer period of time once they do come. We also know how hard it can be to stay with people for a long time, living in that extra bedroom, sharing the same bath, etc. so we thought it could be good for people to have "their own place" whilst visiting. It might also give us a chance of accepting "friends of friends" who might otherwise find it a bit hard to stay with people they do not know so well. And it might be a good place to have "wwoofers" (willing workers on organic farms ( www.wwoof.com.au )).

Another reason for building this little house is to have a place to live whilst we are building the main house. This is a very common practice here in Australia (and probably many other places to) and it is a good way of escaping paying rent to someone whilst you are building. For us we calculated that if we are living in the little house for 6 to 8 months, we have more or less financed the building by the rent we did not have to pay.....and we have a nice litte guest house at the end of it.

Now, the last reason is that of having an office. A long term idea with our property is that we might be running some kind of business from it, be it a bit of organic agriculture, some consultancy work (continuing from our overseas aid work) or we might set up a company and run our own business in an area that has not yet been decided. Having both worked in our bedrooms in previous jobs (mainly in Afghanistan) we know that it is not ideal to live and work in the same place, and as such we wanted a separate building which can be an office. This way, it is a bit easier to separate work and home, something we are keen on doing.

The diary is showing quite a bit of the construction process of the cabins, but in order to make it a bit easier to see the different projects, we have here made a small slideshow to see what has actually happened so far with the cabins. If you are a www.youtube.com enthusiast you can just search for pipshy or you can just click on the picture below to see the little movie:

Since this first film clip was made we have completed the baling around the cabin and have also started the rendering of the bales (as per April 2007). The following film clip shows the outside of the cabin when the baling was completed. For more information, have a look at the diary to see what we have done since.
