Recycling wood for windows

And finally some words regarding recycling of wood for our windows. A long time ago we bought quite a bit of wood from the tip shop, basically old pieces that had been out in the weather for a long long time, for $1 a piece.

A while back we made a picture frame using this wood and found that it turned out quite nicely after using a planer, a sander and some varnish. As such we decided to do the same for the architraves around the windows and the frame around the manholes up the roof cavity. The job is not hard at all, but would be much much easier if we had a proper planer/thicknesser, but unfortunately these are very very expensive. So that will have to wait until later in our lives (or at least in Geir's life as it is him who really would like one).

Starting point - one piece of grey, ugly timber.

After a few minutes with the planer and sander it looks like this.

The next job is then to cut it to the right size and with the right angles to make a frame around the window. And the result is as follows:

And finally a close up of the wood:

OK, it is a little bit of work, but a very nice result comes out of a piece of timber that many would just put in the wood fire. A shame really when you know how much of this stuff that is being wasted and just sent to the tip.

So, that is probably it for tonight. Hopefully it won't take a month before our next update.

Cheers for now !
