Some other little projects

So, now we are almost up to date again. We have been doing some other small things in the house too, but nothing major.

The office needed another bookshelf as we ran out of space. So we decided to build one more in the same style as the other one, basically using structural ply for the sides and the shelves, and then staining it with a Baltic stain before giving it another two coats of clear water based varnish.

It needs to be sorted out, but at least we still have some empty shelves for the stuff we still have in the container.

The movie/music room has been a bit temporary for a while and in order to get it better organised we built a coffee table out of old internal doors. Basically the top, the bottom and the two sides are made from internal hollow doors. These were bought second hand, the paint stripped off and then given a coat or two of varnish. We then used similar mechanisms to our drawers in the kitchen to build 4 drawers that we can use to store CDs and DVS. Works really well and removes them from sight.

Table completed. Top and sides from old doors and the front of the drawers are made of structural pine.

We can get almost 180 cds in each drawer, some than enough space for what we need.

So a much better look now as we could also move our funky blue two seater (which we got for free). The screen is still a temporary sheet, but will be change to a proper screen once we can afford one.

Another project has been a shelf unit for the living room. This is not completed yet, as we are waiting for the hinges use for the doors. As such, only open shelves at the moment, and with a wine rack in the middle. Not many bottles though....

The unit was again made out of ply to make it fit in with the kitchen.

Finally, we have just started putting some architraves and skirting boards in place. This is the major job for the next few weeks and once it is completed, there should not be too much work left to do, well, for the moment anyway.

The architraves and skirting boards are all from tas oak, 65 x 19mm and looks really good with just one or two coats of water based varnish.

So, now we are up to date, more or less. Have also made some doors for the cupboards in the laundry, but they still need some varnish and we'll get some pictures posted once they are completed.

As mentioned when I started this earlier today, we've had a visit from someone selling solar and wind turbines, and the meeting was really interesting. Just have to look a bit at the economics of it all to see what will be the best option for us. Will make an entry on this later on.

I know it is dangerous to promise things when it comes to updating this site, but will most certainly make sure that it won't take as long to update the page again. Just a few too many things have been going on lately to sit down and do computer work. But I have promised Brendan, a friend in New York, to also take some pictures of trees etc. outside, so that you can see how the rest of the property is developing, and this will be done shortly.

Until then, if you are tired of checking the site and not finding any news, send and email to the webmaster address (link at the bottom of the page) and put "website update" in the subject line, and we will include you on a mailing list that is sent out each time the page is updated.

Cheers for now !
